Sydney is a great destination for sports lovers, whether you are a spectator or participant.

The start of the Rolex Sydney Harbour Yacht Race on Boxing Day is the city's premier spectator event. Pack a picnic and find a great spot on the harbour to watch this festival of sails and speed.

Things to do

  • The international cricket season will see New Zealand and South Africa's national teams play a test, one day matches and the crowd-pleasing KFC Twenty20 internationals at the SCG. On a state level, the legendary Sheffield Shield makes a return with matches in November.
  • Can't get enough cricket? The SCG Tour Experience takes you into the dressing rooms, through the players' tunnel, into a private suite, and the Members Pavilion at the Sydney Cricket Ground and Sydney Football Stadium.
  • If you're still enjoying the afterglow of the 2008 Olympics, a visit to Sydney Olympic Park will help you stoke the flame. It's set in parklands with great bike tracks and picnic spots. You can also take the Games Trail tour, which celebrates the stories, legacies and highlights of the Games, a 'Behind the Scenes' Explore tour of ANZ Stadium, or self-guided walking routes.
  • Play a round on one of Sydney's 100 golf courses, crammed with challenging layouts, rolling fairways, spectacular two-tiered greens and sand-traps whiter than Bondi Beach.
  • Traditionally a winter sport, rugby league will be in the spotlight this summer as Sydney hosts the Rugby League World Cup with ten nations competing. The Powerhouse Museum is also running a ‘League of Legends' exhibition until late November.
  • The first big tennis tournament on the 2009 world circuit, the Medibank International at Sydney Olympic Park is used by many of the world's leading players as preparation for the Australian Open.
